John "Buttman" Stagliano is recognized as a porn legend and the inventor of the gonzo porn genre. After Stagliano moved from Chicago to Los Angeles in 1972 to study economics at UCLA, he paid his way through college by writing articles for a porn publication, which led to performing in softcore and hardcore films starting in 1976. Three years later, he toured with the Chippendale dancers and launched three adult magazines: Angel, Heat, and Hot Slut Orgies. Stagliano took up directing in 1983 with "Bouncing Buns."

In 1989 Stagliano released "Dance Fire" as the first movie under his own studio, Evil Angel. Several months later he directed the movie that would alter the history of porn: "The Adventures of Buttman." Today it is considered one of the most important adult films. Because of his ass fetish, Stagliano nicknamed himself "Buttman."

When Rocco Siffredi came to the United States from Italy in the early 1990s, Stagliano teamed up with him to create some of the most amazing sexual adventures ever, including "Buttman in Budapest," "Buttman and Rocco Go to Montreal," and the unforgettable "Fashionistas." The Buttman filmed and edited scenes of studs like Rocco fucking the most filthy-minded European and American beauties. Stagliano's style heavily influenced other directors and an entire genre was born as they emulated his "cinéma verité" style. Over the years, the Buttman and Rocco produced some of the most popular and successful gonzo videos. With Patrick Collins, Stagliano founded his own production company, fittingly called Evil Angel. Today, the "Evil Empire" is a multi-million enterprise dealing in adult video production and magazine publishing.

In 1997 bad Stagliano news spread like wildfire: the Buttman had contracted HIV from unprotected anal sex with a transsexual in Rio de Janeiro. Medication has kept the virus under control and although he appears in non-sex roles and still works behind the camera, Staliano no longer performs on film.

The US government laid multiple charges of obscenity against Stagliano in April 2008. His federal trial began July 2010 in Washington DC, but all charges were dropped with the judge saying the evidence linking Stagliano to the production and distribution of two DVD videos was "woefully insufficient".
